Sodium Hypochlorite Storage Tanks
Storage tanks for sodium hypochlorite (bleach) used in water and wastewater treatment. Bailiff has built tanks for hypochlorite and bleach for decades, and we outfit each one with Schedule 80 PVC or CPVC fittings and hypochlorite-rated gaskets.

Choosing a tank
What to Look for in a Sodium Hypochlorite Tank
Decades of experience
Bailiff has built storage tanks for sodium hypochlorite and bleach for decades. Tell us how often you fill and draw down the tank, and we will build and outfit it for that service.
Opaque white tank
Sunlight breaks hypochlorite down. An opaque white tank blocks UV light and stays cooler in the sun than a darker color, so the solution keeps its strength longer.
Keep it cool
Hypochlorite breaks down about 3–4 times faster for every 18°F rise in temperature. Solution stored at 59°F lasts about 14 times longer than at 95°F, so shade the tank where you can.
Vent sizing
Hypochlorite gives off oxygen as it breaks down. Size the tank vent at twice the diameter of the fill inlet.
Outlet height
Place the main outlet 1–3 ft above the tank bottom so settled solids stay behind, with a second low outlet for cleaning. A cone bottom tank makes cleanout easier.
Overfill protection
Pipe the overflow to containment and add a high-level alarm plus a separate backup level sensor.
Freezing
Hypochlorite freezes at about 7°F at 10% strength, -3°F at 12% and -21.5°F at 15.6%. Above 10%, salts can settle out in the cold.
Keep apart
Acids release chlorine gas, ammonia forms toxic gases, and oils, greases and fuels can react violently. Store hypochlorite away from all of them, and rinse up spills before they dry, because dried residue can ignite.

Fittings
All of our PVC and CPVC fittings are Schedule 80, the heavier-wall industrial grade, and both materials are rated A for sodium hypochlorite under 20%. PVDF and polypropylene also suit hypochlorite. Use vented-ball valves, because an ordinary all-plastic ball valve can trap gas and build pressure. If any metal must touch the solution, use titanium; stainless steel and other common metals corrode quickly and speed up decomposition. See our fittings and options.
Gaskets
We recommend EPDM or Viton (70 durometer or harder) for hypochlorite service.

SG (specific gravity) is the heaviest liquid a tank is built to hold. Water is 1.0, so a 1.9 SG tank is made for liquids up to 1.9 times as heavy as water. Choose an SG rating at or above the specific gravity of your liquid. See our specific gravity chart.

Sodium Hypochlorite Hazards at a Glance
Sodium hypochlorite solution is classed as corrosive (DOT Class 8, UN1791). It causes skin burns and eye damage and is toxic to aquatic life. Mixing it with acids or ammonia releases toxic gases, and it can react violently with oils, greases and fuels.

Sodium Hypochlorite Tank Questions
What tank is best for 12.5% sodium hypochlorite?
HDPE, polypropylene and PVDF are all rated A for sodium hypochlorite under 20% in our compatibility database. HDPE is the most economical. We recommend an opaque white tank, which blocks UV light and stays cooler than a darker color, so the solution keeps its strength longer.
What SG rating does a bleach tank need?
Sodium hypochlorite at 12–15% has a specific gravity of about 1.16–1.21. Choose a tank rated at or above the specific gravity of your solution. The tanks on this page are rated 1.5 SG or higher.
How big should the vent be on a hypochlorite tank?
Hypochlorite gives off oxygen as it breaks down, so the tank must be vented. Size the vent at twice the diameter of the fill inlet.
Which fittings and gaskets work with sodium hypochlorite?
Our PVC and CPVC fittings are all Schedule 80, the heavier-wall industrial grade, and both are rated A for hypochlorite. We recommend EPDM or Viton gaskets and vented-ball valves. If metal must touch the solution, use titanium.
How does temperature affect sodium hypochlorite?
Heat speeds decomposition: it runs about 3–4 times faster for every 18°F rise. Solution stored at 59°F lasts about 14 times longer than at 95°F.
