About Insulated Tanks

Insulated tanks are covered with closed-cell polyurethane spray foam, rated R-6.7 per inch, and sealed with a white elastomeric coating that protects the foam from UV. HDPE handles a wide range of acids, caustics and water-based chemicals and is the most economical resin.

  • Standard insulation is 2 inches thick (R-13.4); 3 inch (R-20.1) and 4 inch (R-26.8) are available on request.
  • The sides and top of the tank are insulated.
  • A good fit for freeze protection and for chemicals that crystallize or gel in cold weather, such as 50% sodium hydroxide and DEF.
  • Heat tracing can be added when insulation alone is not enough.

Frequently Asked Questions

How thick is the insulation?

Standard insulation is 2 inches of closed-cell polyurethane foam (R-13.4). We also offer 3 inch (R-20.1) and 4 inch (R-26.8) on request.

When do I need an insulated tank?

Use an insulated tank for freeze protection and for chemicals that crystallize or gel in cold weather, such as 50% sodium hydroxide and DEF (diesel exhaust fluid).

Can heat tracing be added?

Yes. We offer heat tracing in combination with the insulation when insulation alone is not enough.

What do the 1.5, 1.9 and 2.2 SG ratings mean?

The SG (specific gravity) rating is the heaviest liquid a tank is built to hold. Water is 1.0. Tanks rated 1.5 SG are for liquids up to 12.5 pounds per gallon, 1.9 SG up to 15.8 pounds per gallon and 2.2 SG up to 18.3 pounds per gallon. Choose a rating at or above the specific gravity of your liquid. See our specific gravity chart.

When you need to stabilize the contents of your tank to maintain a temperature or prevent freezing, our insulated tanks can be the answer.

Insulation can be combined with Heat Trace to keep tank contents at a pre-set minimum temperature.  This is especially beneficial for chemicals like Sodium Hydroxide (Caustic Soda) where the liquid becomes viscous and hard to pump at temperatures below 65 F.
