Heat Tracing for Plastic Storage Tanks
Heat trace systems deliver controlled, low-level heat along the tank wall to prevent freezing, preserve viscosity and keep processes consistent.
Heat trace systems provide a reliable, energy-efficient method for maintaining fluid temperatures in polyethylene (poly) tank installations. By delivering controlled, low-level heat along tank walls, these systems prevent freezing, preserve product viscosity, and ensure consistent process performance across a wide range of ambient conditions. We use Heat Trace on our tanks in combination with the spray foam insulation to keep liquids at the proper temperature.
Freeze Protection
The primary function of heat trace on poly tanks is freeze protection. Water-based chemicals, fertilizers, and process fluids can freeze at or near 32 deg F (0 deg C), causing tank damage, cracked fittings, or blocked outlets. Heat trace maintains tank contents above the freeze threshold continuously, safeguarding infrastructure and eliminating costly downtime from frozen lines or ruptured equipment.
Viscosity Control
Many industrial fluids — including adhesives, surfactants, and certain agricultural chemicals — become highly viscous or solidify at low temperatures, making pumping difficult or impossible. By holding the product at an optimal temperature range, heat trace ensures consistent pumpability and accurate metering, reducing equipment wear and improving process reliability throughout cold-weather operations.
Thermostat & Control Integration
A line-sensing or ambient-sensing thermostat governs the entire system. The controller monitors temperature at a
representative point on the tank wall and activates the heat trace circuit only when temperatures approach a defined setpoint. This minimizes energy consumption while providing consistent protection. Advanced controllers support dual-setpoint operation: one threshold for freeze protection and a higher setpoint for viscosity management.
